Versus

Bermudian Springs High School

Heartbreak!

Forget the pre-season rankings.  Throw away the "should happen" book.  When Northern plays Bermudian, anything can, and usually does, happen.  Last night was no exception as the Bears entered Bostic stadium a favorite over what should have been a young re-building Bermudian Springs team.  Last year the Eagles came into the game ranked 9th in the state in AA.  This year's team was supposed be rebuilding.  It was better.

The see-saw game got off to an exciting start for the Bears who saw Dane Eichelberger return the opening kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown.  Ike's return was a thing of beauty as he rumbled down the Northern sideline literally running over would be Bermudian tacklers.  The lead would not hold.  Bermudian came right back successfully using their jet sweep time and time again enroute to their first score tying the game at 7.  Bermudian scored again to take the lead but the Bears stormed back.  Eventually, Northern would take a 21-14 lead but it was the last time they would lead the game.  In the second half, the eagles scored 21 unanswered points.  When the Polar Bears did find their way into the end zone in the 4th quarter to cut the gap to 7, they could not stop the Eagle offense who successfully ran the clock out.

For Bermudian, it was a game that will launch their season.  For our Polar Bears, it was a wake up call.  District 3 and the Mid-Penn Colonial are wide open this year.  Last year's playoff teams, Manheim Central, Garden Spot, Mechanicsburg, and our Bears all lost last night.  Like I said, throw away the rankings.  This is a talent rich football team.  The leaders will step up and this very good football team will move forward.  As Coach Mauck told his players after the game.  "We will be there in the end."

Next Week vs. Central York at Bostic Stadium.  Kickoff is at 7:30 P.M.
