Week 5
Versus
Rolling On
A
crisp fall evening on the last day of September is the perfect time to go under
the Friday night lights. Such was the case
as the Bears traveled down Route 81 to Shippensburg. The word on the Greyhounds was that they were
a "chippy" 0-4 football team who had lost to Mechanicsburg the
previous week 7-0; a game in which they held All-American Zach Frazer to just
130 yards passing. "Chippy" is
the right word.
With
the score tied at zero after the fist quarter, the Bears got it going when Mike
Romagnoli went 52 yards for the first score.
Chad Halterman, who remains one of the most dangerous punt returners in
the Mid-Penn, then broke his first return of the night 58 yards. Northern went into the halftime locker room
with a 14-0 lead and would never look back.
The 3rd quarter was all Northern as Chad broke his second punt return of
the night 58 yards, Colby hit Corey for 27 yards and a score, and the Defense
registered a safety when Ship's long snapper sailed one out of the back of the
end zone.
Ike
and Gerald added scores from scrimmage in the 4th quarter and the Bears had two
touchdowns called back on penalties.
One, which would have been Chad Halterman's 3rd punt return TD of the
night, and one a long rumble by Mike Romagnoli.
Mike finished with 135 yards on 10 carries to lead all rushers.
Defensively,
the Polar Bears were excellent. They
held Shippensburg to 4 total yards in the 1st half and a total of 72 total
yards on the night. The Greyhounds had
zero yards passing and only one completion.
Sophomore Alex Potteiger earned his first Varsity Interception and
outstanding games by Brandon Adams, Craig Moose, and Scott Albright kept
Greyhound QB Van Scyoc on his back most of the night. It's actually difficult to single out
defensive efforts as Coach Wise's entire defensive unit was nothing short of
brilliant.
The
Bears come home next week to face
Quotable
"We
played well on special teams, but we have to cut down on the penalties, and
clean our game up. Our return game got
us started. Their defense played well, and they really hit us hard. They will
get someone in the second half of the season. This team (Shippensburg) is
better than people give them credit for."
--Northern Head Coach, Rick Mauck
"Shippensburg
is a lot better than everyone is giving them credit for. We played our hardest, and actually their defense
played very well, but we were able to wear at them. I appreciate every carry
that I get, but we have a lot of weapons. Our offensive line played well
tonight. Having those weapons, allows us to use different people when teams are
keying on one of us." --Senior
Running Back, Mike Romagnoli
"I
was able to field the punt, look up and I saw a lane to the right. I got some
good blocks downfield to open the lane to the end zone. I give credit to my
teammates who do the blocking."
