Northern 35 – Shippensburg 21

In a hard fought struggle between two quality District 3 AAA Playoff teams, the 2007 Northern Polar Bears secured their place in history by finishing the regular season a perfect 10-0 while ending Shippensburg’s quest to share in the Colonial Division Championship.  The Greyhounds led by 4th Year Starter Craig Van Scyoc were determined to give the Polar Bears everything they could handle and they did just that.

Northern began the scoring when Michael Davies went in from 8 yards out.  A mishandled snap left the Polar Bears with a 6-0 lead but the Greyhounds came right back when after a 60 yard kickoff return, Ship scored on an Ethan Naylor 30 TD run.  The extra point gave the Greyhounds a 7-6 lead. It was the only lead the Greyhounds have on the night.  Northern stormed back with two straight scores taking a 21-7 lead but with three minutes remaining in the first half, Hound QB, Craig van Scyoc threw into triple coverage and somehow WR, Loren Horst came down with the 29 yard touchdown reception.  The first half concluded with Northern leading 21-14.

The third quarter saw the teams trade possessions but Northern again struck pay dirt when Jordan Rutherford called his own number for the second time in the contest and scored from 3 yards out.  The two touchdown lead was short-lived again as Shippensburg broke a big return on the kickoff.  Two plays later, the Hounds scored again when Naylor went in again from 4 yards out.  After the momentum changing touchdown, Northern received the kickoff and Rutherford went to work leading the Bears to their own momentum change.  With six minutes left in the game, Jordan hit Ryan Aumiller with a strike down the middle and Aumiller did the rest running over and past two Ship defenders.  It was 35-21 and the Polar Bear defense then closed the door with an interception.  Game over!

The Northern Polar Bears completed their second straight undefeated regular season and earned the #1 Seed in the District 3 AAA Playoffs.  Their regular season included wins over three District 3 playoff teams.   After the course of the regular season and particularly the past two weeks, the Polar Bears are battle tested and ready for the playoffs.  As the #1 seed, they have drawn Hamburg from the Berks League, Section 2.  Hamburg was 7-3 on the season suffering close losses to Northern Lebanon and Reading Holy Name.  The Hawks will be at Bostic this Friday night for Round 1 of the District 3 AAA Tournament.  It will be a packed house so get there early.  Gates open at 5:30 p.m. for a 7:00 p.m. Kickoff.

Congratulations, Champions!
