2007 Begins

Season Opener at Bermudian Springs

August 31, 2007

Northern 38 – Bermudian 14

2007 starts off with a bang as the Polar Bears marched into York Springs unbeaten in their last 18 regular season games.  They made it 19 tonight.  The Bears scored first by virtue of a Matt Sheibley field goal.  A defensive Pick-6 interception return for a touchdown by Jake “Bull” Scott and a Jordan Rutherford to Don Bell pass in the corner of the end zone added to the scoring.  Ultimately, Northern took a 24-0 halftime lead into the locker room.

Bermudian, however, was not to be taken for granted.  Northern/Bermudian has developed into quite a rivalry over the years and that rivalry sparked up late in the 3rd quarter.  Last year’s Division III champs came to play in the second half and they turned up the heat.    The Eagles took advantage of a couple of Northern miscues and added two touchdowns of their own late but Northern put the game away with the running tandem of Mokes Davies and Bubba Smith.  The pair ground out over 160 yards rushing behind a bruising offensive line.  Jordan looked solid tossing two touchdowns and calling his own number from the 1 yard line.

While there are always things to work on, the Polar Bears looked pretty solid for the first game of the season.  The defensive line generally created chaos most of the night with the linebackers filling the holes nicely.   The offensive line was impressive led by Dylan Pennington and Jake Scott who opened huge holes for the backs.  When all is said and done, the coaches have to be pleased but know that their work is cut out for them this coming week as a bigger, faster, Central York team comes to play at Bostic.

Congratulations Bears, make it 20 next week.
