Vs. Cumberland Valley at Chapman Field

One of the many factors of having a successful Varsity football program is the development of younger players.  The sophomore and junior football players this year are the Friday Night Lights players of next year.  There is a progression that these young men go through and for Northern Football, that progression begins very early.   It starts in the youth football program, moves to the 7th and 8th grade level, continues at the freshman level, refines at the JV level, and culminates at the Varsity level.

Wins and losses at the JV level are nearly meaningless.  It’s about practicing what the players have learned.  It’s about understanding the system and learning personal responsibility.  The final score of the game is secondary.  In fact, there are many players who begin the season at the JV level who finish at the Varsity level.  In eight years of covering Northern football, I have yet to see the same 22 players begin the Varsity season and end the Varsity season.  Players constantly move from the JV team to the Varsity team and that is why these Monday night games are so very important.  It tells the coaches who is where in their own progression.

On Monday, October 8, 2007, the JV Bears traveled to Chapman Field to take on one of the premier football programs in the state.  Cumberland Valley is one of the biggest Quad A football programs rich in history and extremely well coached.  The younger Bears acquitted themselves nicely.  They performed extremely well on many levels.  Coached by Marty Green, Dale Reeder, Adam Butterbaugh, and Shane Eslinger, Northern came to play.  There were quite a few standout performances and if the fans learned anything, it was that Northern’s future is quite bright indeed.
