Northern 62 – Milton 20

Prior to kickoff, the Polar Bear faithful honored one of their fallen with a pre-game tribute to Scott Davies, a Youth Football Coaching legend who left us two years ago.  Dale Reeder’s stirring tribute was read prior to the National Anthem and left not a dry eye at Bostic Field.  Ten Minutes later, Scott’s son, Michael, continued building his own legend leading the Polar Bears to their 24th consecutive regular season win.  Only tackled four times all night, Mokes left the game after the first half with 300 yards rushing and 6 touchdowns.

And Scott is smiling.

The game began auspiciously when Northern fumbled the opening kickoff. The ball was recovered by the Black Panthers who took it in to the endzone for the first score of the night.  A missed extra point left the score at 6-0 but we were just getting started.  On the ensuing kickoff, Homecoming King, Eddie Stephenson took the ball and raced down the home sidelines returning the favor and scoring the Bears first touchdown.  It was 7-6 and the game was only 25 seconds long.

On the wet turf, Milton came right back on a couple of big plays and scored once more retaking the lead at 12-7.  That’s when Mokes got it going.  After his first score, the Polar Bear defense said enough is enough and led by Mokes, Jake Scott, and Tim McAleer, the Northern defense began to punish Milton’s ball carriers.  Michael kept it going scoring again, and again, and again.  The offensive line was bruising.  The D Line and Backers were a meat grinder.  The 1st half was emotional and pounding and tempers flared.  The home and away stands experienced some of the hardest hits of the season and it didn’t matter whether it was the 1st or 2nd team in there, the hits kept coming.  At the half, the Bears led 55-20 and the mercy-rule kicked in for the remainder of the game.

Under the mercy-rule, the clock continues to run so the 2nd half finished much quicker than the 1st but the tempo didn’t change one bit.  The Bears kept hitting.  Robbie Blieler, Bubba Smith, and Kevin Bartrum all had crushing hits and Luke Barricklow separated several receivers from the ball .  Dustin Miller, who scored twice, and Robert James continued churning out yards behind the line and when it was over, the Bears won by 42 and stayed unbeaten on the year.

Northern will look to continue their streak next Friday at Bostic when they host WHTM TV27’s Friday Night Football and the Big Spring Bulldogs.
