Week 8

Undefeated, Northern Looks to the Final Two

Polar Bears Crush Susquenita on a Rare Saturday Game

October 20, 2007

Northern 42 – Susquenita 0

Ten minutes after the Polar Bears left the field Friday night after warm-ups, the skies opened to torrential rains and lightning in Perry County.  One hour later, it was decided that the game would not be played until the following day at 2:00 p.m.  The Northern faithful headed back down 11 and 15 only to return 17 hours later to finish what had become a rather significant lull in the schedule.  Playing three winless teams in a row has its own set of problems and having dispatched Susquenita, the Bears can now look forward to two highly competitive games to close out the regular season.

Next up is East Penn who handled West Perry Friday night and who also took unbeaten Redland to overtime earlier this season.  The Panthers always come to play and are already talking up this game in the local media.  The Polar Bears will look to reclaim their poise and make their mark in the Colonial and in District 3 this Friday on Senior Night.

As for Saturday’s game, the Bears took care of business early jumping out to a 28-0 lead in the first quarter.   Mokes ran for 86 yards and two touchdowns in less than two quarters and Bubba Smith also scored twice while gaining 91 yards on the ground.  Other scoring came from a Jordan Rutherford to Donnie Bell bomb of 65 yards in the 1st quarter and a Robbie Bleiler interception for a touchdown.  Bleiler also had a beautiful catch and run for a touchdown called back on a penalty.  Northern had another score called back on an Alex Potteiger dash up the home sidelines although at this point in time, we’re not sure why.  It might have been a penalty or he might have stepped out of bounds; no-one’s really sure.

The bottom line is this: Northern’s next two games will help to tell the tale of the season.  With a win this week they will claim a share of the Colonial division title but that will satisfy no-one.  The Polar Bears destiny is in its own hands.  Run the table and they will be outright Colonial Champions again.  That said, you can’t run the table without beating this week’s opponent.  This is East Penn week.  All Polar Bear eyes and attention will be focused solely on East Penn, nothing else.

Don’t miss it!
