Week 5

Northern Shuts Out Mustangs

September 28, 2007

Northern 36 – West Perry 0

On a crisp, clear night in Western Perry County, Northern continued the domination of their schedule and the West Perry Mustangs.  In their second league game, the Polar Bears shut out the green and white and shut down every aspect of the Mustang’s game.  They rolled up 295 rushing yards while holding WP to only 65.  Jordan Rutherford was again masterful completing 10 of 14 passes for 166 yards, no interceptions, and two touchdowns.  Michael Davies continued his awesome season pounding out 171 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, what can you say?  West Perry tried to run up the middle and were stuffed.  They tried to run outside and were shut down.  They tried to throw short and deep but only connected on 7 passes.  WP Quarterback Bruce McKown was harassed all night and ended up throwing 3 interceptions, one each to Robbie Bleiler, Eddie Stephenson, and Alex Potteiger.  The center of the defensive line man-handled the Mustangs and on 4th down, the Bears D held three times.   Whenever it seemed the Mustangs had life, Northern took it away.  After a Polar Bear turnover, WP went into a “no huddle” to try to catch the bears adjusting but Northern’s Tim McAleer hit Mustang’s Running Back Garrett Waddell at the line of scrimmage, stripped the ball, and recovered the fumble.

It was that kind of night for Coach Al Ream’s Mustangs.  The Bears O Line led by Dylan Pennington and Jake Scott opened enormous holes for Mokes and Bubba Smith and allowed Jordan all the time he needed and more.  Scott, on the defensive side, was joined by Antonio Myers, McAleer, Hank Sanders, and Ryan O’ Toole as havoc wreakers, confusing, and tossing around players in green and white.  The Bears secondary came up huge as Alex Potteiger and Eddie Stephenson refused to allow West Perry’s receivers to beat them.

With the win, Northern moved to 5-0 on the season, 2-0 in the league.  They have won 23 straight regular season games.  On Deck is Milton from District 4 who comes in off a one-point loss to Shikellamy.  Milton is struggling this year but have one of the toughest schedules in the state and the boys will tell you from last year, they hit hard.

It’s Homecoming night for the Bears.  Come early!
