October 10, 2008

Northern 42 – Gettysburg 0

From the opening kickoff you could hear the crack of pads and helmets smashing together for nearly two and a half hours at Bostic Stadium last night.  Northern came through the gate possessed with a fire that blazed as bright as any time this season.  These Bears were on a mission after having stumbled last week at Hershey Park Stadium and they sent a message that the reigning conference champions will not be taken lightly and any advantage gained on them will have to be earned.

Coach Mauck had his team firing on all cylinders after a tough week of practice as was evidenced by their first drive.  Joe Tuschak led Northern down the field into the red zone but the Bears came up short as penalties set them back outside the 20.   Even though they failed to score, Northern let Gettysburg know that they would in fact be moving the ball tonight.  On the other side of the field, Gettysburg came in with some fight of their own marching down the field after the change of possession but as they approached the end zone, Warrior QB Justin Jones was picked by Robbie Bleiler who burned down the visiting sidelines for 90 yards and the games first score.  It was a devastating blow to Gettysburg who could look at the play as a 14 point swing.  The teams slugged it out for the rest of the1st quarter but in the second, the Bears drove again on the legs of Robert James who punched it into the end zone on a 4th down play from the 2 yard line.   Northern took a 14-0 lead into the locker room.

The second half was all Polar Bears.  Joe Tuschak hit Ryan Aumiller on a 27 yard touchdown and followed that with a 21 yard strike to Robbie Bleiler in the 4th quarter.  With the Bears leading 28-0, Gettysburg was forced into the air.  On their first possession after the Robbie’s 2nd touchdown of the night, Justin Jones dropped back again only to be drilled by Antonio Myers in mid-throw.  The result was a Tyler Potteiger interception that also went for a touchdown.  Robert De Muro capped the scoring with a 21 yard run for a score during the mercy-rule clock runoff and the Bears left the field with an impressive 42-0 victory over last year’s District 3 powerhouse, Gettysburg Warriors.

The victory sets up a showdown next week in Greencastle between the undefeated Blue Devils and the Bears.  This game will have it all with a Conference Championship and District playoff seedings all on the line.  Believe me when I tell you that it will be worth every minute of the drive down Route 81.  Don’t miss it!
