Week 4
Versus
100 Wins!
Creating
a piece of history on a short week, the Polar Bears rolled up the Greencastle
Blue Devils last night to notch Head Coach Rick Mauck's 100th coaching
victory. The Bears scored early and
often in what can only be described as nearly perfect efficiency in the first
half. On the 3rd play from scrimmage,
Colby Betz threw to Drew Romagnoli who broke a tackle on the Northern sideline
and raced 70 yards for the touchdown. It
was Drew's first of four touchdowns on the night. On the Bear's second possession, Colby hit
Drew again for a 49 yard touchdown pass.
Greencastle came back when Tyreek Thrush scored on a 20 yard run. The kick failed and Northern led 14-6. Brent Brockman hit a 22 yard field goal to
close out scoring in the first quarter and the Bears led 17-6. The 2nd quarter held more scoring for Drew
Romagnoli who is making a loud statement this year. After Colby Betz scored from a yard out on a
quarterback sneak, the Blue Devils answered on another Thrush touchdown but
then it was Drew's turn. He first scored
on a 39 yard pass from Colby but then as the clock was winding down in the half
and Greencastle was again moving the ball, Keith Kunkle tipped a pass from
Blake Border which Drew gathered in and raced 39 yards for the interception
return for a touchdown. At the half, the
bears led 38-14. Drew had already caught
3 passes for 155 yards and three touchdowns as well as a touchdown on an
interception.
There
was no scoring in the 3rd quarter and the 4th saw the Bears and the Blue Devils
trade a pair of touchdowns. The most
remarkable came as Greencastle tried an onsides kick to attempt to pull
themselves back into the game somehow.
The kick was fielded cleanly by Keith Kunkle who raced 47 yards
untouched for the touchdown. Kunkle was
definitely the special teams player of the night, Earlier, he took out a blocker and the ball carrier
after sacrificing himself on a kickoff.
It was a thing of Beauty. Special
Team kudos also go out to Bears Kicker, Brent Brockman who, himself, was
perfect on the night with 7 of 7 extra points and 1 of 1 field goals from 22
yards.
The game
was a great way for the Bears to get healthy after the heartbreaking,
last-minute loss to Mechanicsburg last week.
They begin conference play with a big win and look forward to going 2-0
in the conference next week after hosting the Greyhounds of Shippensburg at
Bostic. Kickoff is at
