Versus

Big Spring

Bears now 7-0 After the Speed Bump in Newville

Northern 55      Big Spring 7

One wonders what the schedule makers were thinking at Big Spring when they scheduled Northern for their Homecoming game.  If this were a prize-fight, it would have been stopped in the 1st round.  Northern fans remember many knock-down drag-out games with the Bulldogs.  The 4-0 victory comes to mind.  Northern fans also remember Big Spring coming in to Bostic in 2003 on the last game of the season and knocking off the Polar Bears 37-34 to win the Colonial Division.  There have been many tough games between these two clubs.

This was not one of them.

Dane Eichelberger got the party started when he scored on a 24 yard romp 52 seconds into the game.  Gerald Anderson scored the first of his three touchdowns next going in from 10 yards out five minutes later.  Chad Halterman closed out the 1st quarter with a 14 yard touchdown scramble of his own.  The 2nd quarter saw G score again from 33 yards out and less than a minute later, Ryan Stephenson picked off a Bulldog pass and returned it 45 yards into the end zone.  Gerald closed out the half with his third touchdown from 34 yards and the Bears took a 42-0 lead into the locker room.  In the 3rd quarter the Varsity starters each saw one series but Coach Mauck called off the Bears as they were marching down the field for another score.  The younger players came in but finished with the same result when QB Jordan Rutherford hit Andrew Juba for a 3 yard score.  Big Spring did manage a 4th quarter touchdown of their own but Northern answered when Juba scored again on a 21 yard blast up the middle.

The Bears interior defensive line was a wrecking crew as Antonio Myers and Tim McAleer wreaked havoc along the front.  Scottie Albright made some great plays off the corner and Jake Scott was a beast on both sides of the ball.  The line-backing corps of Kefauver, Davies, and Sanders filled every gap and punished every ball carrier.  The secondary again showed why it’s generally a mistake to throw against them.  Offensively, what can you say?  The Bears never punted.  The offensive line was dominant as were the backs.  Notably, Gerald Anderson rushed for 130 yards.  Chad Halterman was a perfect 5 for 5 with 129 yards as was Jordan Rutherford who went 2 out of 2 for 27 yards and a touchdown.

The Bears host Division Rival Susquenita next Friday Night at Bostic.  WHTM TV 27 will be on hand for Friday Night Football immediately following the game at Al’s Pizza on Rt. 15, Dillsburg.  It is also Farmers Fair weekend so get to the stadium early.
