Versus

East Penn

Undefeated, Bears Clinch a Share of the Mid-Penn Colonial

Northern 56      East Penn 22

Northern is as accustomed to rain on Friday night as they have been the past three weeks of Mercy-Ruling their opponents before the end of the 1st half.  As they looked at their schedule this past week, previous blowouts of opponents and won/loss records would not factor in to tonight’s game.  This was East Penn.  This was a rivalry.  These were the Panthers who ruined their previous attempt at an undefeated season in 2003 and who beat them later that year in their 1st playoff appearance.  This is the East Penn crew who would chirp, holler, and keep coming regardless of the score or the game situation.  This is a true rivalry and tonight…………

Northern beat them down!

There was no sign of complacency in the Bears as they jumped out to a 28-0 first quarter lead.  There was no letting down after a 42-0 half-time lead.  When Northern started the 2nd half with the JV squad, East Penn decided to keep in all varsity starters even trying an onside kick during the mercy rule.    At that point Coaches Mauck and Wise put the Varsity back in the game and finished the smack-down adding 14 points and shutting out the Panthers the rest of the way.

Gerald Anderson rushed 14 times for 185 yards and 5 touchdowns.  On the night, Gerald eclipsed 1000 yards on the season with one regular season game to go.  Michael Davies ran for 90 yards and a touchdown of his own.  Chad Halterman found the end zone twice.  Once on a QB sneak and the other on a beautiful 65 yard punt return.  Northern’s O Line was amazing opening up huge holes all night long.  Defensively, the Bears picked off EP quarterback Nick Pisani four times; two by Michael Davies and held him to just 24 yards passing.  Northern rolled up 400 yards in some of the worst weather conditions they’ve played in, in years.  It was a huge statement win for the Bears who are now just one of two undefeated District 3 teams.

Next week Northern closes out the regular season at home against Shippensburg.  It will be Senior night and with a win, the Bears will not only close out the season undefeated for the first time since the 80’s, but will capture the Colonial Division outright for the 3rd year in a row and assure themselves a high seed for the State playoffs.
