Versus
Mechanicsburg
Physical only begins to cover this backyard brawl………
For
the third week in a row, the Polar Bears were treated to rain on Friday
Night. Rain or dry, it didn’t really
matter as nothing was going tamper down this rivalry. The Mechanicsburg Wildcats came in off of a
loss to Spring Grove while the Bears looked to remain unbeaten on the
year. Tempers flared early as the
hitting began. Even though the Polar
Bears got out to an early lead, Mechanicsburg refused to go away.
Northern
struck first as Gerald Anderson broke a 76 yard touchdown run. Northern’s D held tough and when Michael
Davies scored from 10 yards out, the Bears jumped to a 14-0 lead in the 1st
quarter. In the 2nd quarter
Mechanicsburg got into the game when Jake Zeigler scored on a 12 yard
rush. The teams traded possessions but
with time winding down in the half, Chad Halterman ran it in from the 5 yard
line. Northern led 21-6 at the break.
The
second half scoring got underway when G, who had 167 yards rushing on the
night, scored his second touchdown, this time on 4th down around
left end from 10 yards out. With the
Bears leading 28-6, this game was anything but over. Mechanicsburg fought tough and when Freshman
Tarik Leftenent returned a punt for 72 yards and a touchdown, the Wildcats had
life. Midway through the 4th
quarter,
